I love it so much that I'm willing to ignore its ridiculous icon.

THE king of image viewers. IrfanView is 21 years-old and I've been using it for as long. The interface hasn't changed much in those years because the design is simple and easy to configure. Plugins are available to expand its file handling capabilities for rarely used file types.

Even when it may have a somewhat unpleasant aesthetic (especially its icon), it is fast, light and versatile. This marvel is an essential part of the Freeware/OpenSource set of applications that I always install and use on my PC. Do yourself a favor, try it.

Try XnView first

I've tested IrfanView, XnView Standard version, and FastStone Image Viewer. I liked XnView the most.

If you're looking for a free image viewer and basic editor, I suggest to try XnView first.

Excellent application functionality wise, it's blistering fast and it isn't bloated with unnecessary features.

However with that said, it's sad that an application used by many photographers, designers and graphic artists, end up having such a distasteful icon and GUI. It appears that people have offered re-designing the toolbar and icon, but apparently the author doesn't care about the looks. While sure functionality is more important than looks, why not have both?.

Extremely lightweight, streamlined and very functional. The plugins are the icing on the cake!
However, the shortcuts/navigation/customisation options are very restrictive and may take some getting used to.

The alignment (rotation) of single pdf pages around a small corner (e.g., 2 °) is not possible with PDFFill (only 90 °, 180 °, 270 °).
With IRFANVIEW one can turn single pdf pages in a pdf document also about only few degrees, see http://hypervtx.in/desktop/irfanview/ .
